The Yarapa river, whose source lies near the foothills of the Brazilian border, is one of many tributaries of the great Ucayali River, the predecessor of the mighty Amazon. Endowed with white and black water river systems, and the affiliated nutrient-poor soils. Sculpted over geological time into a mosaic of high and low terrain, the Yarapa area is today an intricate blend of seasonally flooded Igapo and Varzea forests, and high-ground forests. Each of these forest types supports its own types of plant and animal species. Together, they form a community of communities, a diversity in which we managed to identify more than 200 species of birds, countless arthropods including bullet ants and rainbow-colored orb spiders, and the omnipresent nine species of primates. The marmosets, capuchins, howlers, squirrel monkeys, and more. Locals have also collected more than 100 species of medicinal plants they use for their everyday.
The Yarapa river is a territory of the kukama, the Amazonian ethnic group that has lived for millennia in this flooding rainforest. At Amazon Jaguar Adventure, an incorporated company owned and staffed by Kukama, Yagua, and Ashuar people, we are proud to develop a sustainable tourism program in this area of rich biodiversity.
The Yarapa Communal Reserve is managed by the local Kukama community and aims to develop programs for the sustainable use of natural resources in order to promote better life opportunities for local people through community participation.
During the censuses, fourteen species of primates were registered, which corresponds to 3 species of Callitrichids and 11 of Cebidae. Among the congeneric primates that inhabit the Reserve are Saguinus mystax and S. fuscicollis, Cebus apella and C. albifrons, Saimiri sciureus and S. boliviensis. This last species was reported by Puertas & Bodmer (1993). Large ones include Cacajao calvus "red huapo", Pithecia monachus "black huapo", Lagothrix lagotricha "choro", Ateles paniscus "maquisapa" and Alouatta seniculus "coto". Also living in the reserve are Aotus nancymae (A.nancymai) "musmuqui", Callicebus cupreus "red stump" and the zebra monkey pygmaea "leoncito".
Pick up you from your accommodation or the Iquitos airport early in the morning in a private vehicle heading to Nauta town. The ride will take 1 hour 40 minutes. During the road trip, our guide will make a brief description and historical review of Iquitos region
In the city of Nauta we will embark on a comfortable boat equipped with life-saving vests.
After an hour of navigation, we will arrive at where it is officially known as the formation of the Amazon River, which is the union of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers.
Enjoy seeing the majesty of the father of all the rivers.
At this point is common to spot the gray and pink dolphins since many species of fish that feed these beautiful dolphin specimens abound in this area.
We will navigate until we reach the Yarapa River. The Yarapa River is one of the rivers that houses one of the highest populations of gray and pink dolphins as well as birds, reptiles, primates, or monkeys.
This river has been chosen by one of the most prestigious universities in the world such as the Cornell University of New York to carry out research in Ornithology, Botany, Primatology, and other specialties.
We will be arriving at the community-run lodge in the Yarapa river at 1:00 p.m. A welcome fruit of the season beverage will be served, then cabins will be assigned to our guests. It's time to get ready for a delicious lunch.
During the afternoon we will go for a boat excursion through the jungle to observe birds and monkeys that abound in this part of the Amazonia. Also we will spot gray and pink dolphins in their natural environment.
All are welcome to jump in to the Yarapa river for a relaxing swim.
We will be espectators of a beautiful rainforest sunset.
After a satisfying dinner prepared with fresh products from the Amazon region we will make a nocturnal hike in search of reptiles, amphibians, rodents, and arachnids. We will enjoy the beautiful symphony of nocturnal life.
As birds are most active at dawn, we will start our day with birdwatching before breakfast. Hundreds of parrots and macaws fly noisily across the rainforest canopy, while Hoatzins whisper their hoarse sounds as they brow the leaves of the Macrolobium trees.
You may also hear the loud howls of the Howler Monkeys or see a troop of Saki monkeys bounding through the treetops. In fact, 10 species of monkeys have been recorded in the Yarapa River.
After breakfast, we will head to the reserved zone of the Cumaceba river. Giant trees such as the Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), the Shihuahuaco (Dipteryx micrantha), the Machimango (Eschweilera juruensis), will be found along the way.
Yummy box lunch served onboard.
In the afternoon we invite you to a sport fishing of piranhas and other species.
After dinner we invite you to a storytelling special. Stories, myths and legends of the Amazonian people.
After breakfast, we will experience the Amazon Rainforest in the "terra firma" forest. The "terra firma" forest is a gently undulating hill (“solid ground”), composed of layers of alluvial soil that were deposited as much as 2.5 million years ago and subsequently uplifted to positions above flooding level. Shallow oxbow lakes and wetlands are found. You will learn from your guide about the forest's medicinal plants and their traditional usage. There are many colorful flowers in the Yarapa Communal Reserve, but it takes a bit of an effort to find them. Orchids and Heliconias are among the more spectacular Amazon Forest Plants.
After lunch we start our way back, stopping at the Puerto Miguel community to stretch our legs and get the chance to contribute to the community by buying some of their hand-made handicrafts.
